What to expect from a session with Dr Sue?

Firstly reassurance! She is supportive and non-judgemental and will encourage you to achieve your goals in the shortest possible time.

Hypnotherapy is sometimes misunderstood as people believe they’ll be out of control, or in a deep trance that makes them vulnerable. Absolutely not! No one can be put into a trance unless they want to be and no one can put suggestions into your unconscious mind that goes against who you are. Dr Sue teaches you how to relax so you feel re-energised and in control with new tools to help you in the rest of your life! When you’ve had your first session you’ll be wondering what you ever worried about as you attain those goals in such a relaxed and comfortable way.

If there are aspects of your life that you are concerned about then unless we change the patterns of thinking around them then the same old feelings and behaviours continue. Will power alone is not enough!

If these lists don’t include the area you would like help with then please get in touch and ask!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT EQUINOX HYPNOTHERAPY

These are the most FAQ’s but if you don’t see what you would like to ask here, please do get in touch!

What does hypnotherapy feel like?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind similar to daydreaming. Some people don’t realise that they can hear, move or speak under hypnotherapy. Everybody’s experience of it is different, and how an individual feels may vary each time they go into hypnosis. While some people describe hearing every word the therapist says, others find their mind wanders; many people lose track of time during the session. How aware or unaware you are during the process is unimportant and does not affect the efficacy of the session. Most people describe being very relaxed during and after the session and more enjoyable than they expected.

Do I lose control of my will during hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a streamlined state of focused attention, similar to when you are absorbed in a book or a film. You have the ability to emerge from hypnosis at any time if you wish. Your hypnotherapist could be described as a guide taking you on a journey. They are the facilitator, but you are the only one who make the changes you want. Realising that you’re in control and can make changes yourself can be very empowering. The more often you choose to go into hypnosis the easier it is to relax into the process, secure in the knowledge that you remain in control.

How long does your session last for?

You are invited to have a free no obligation 30 minute meeting with me so that we can discuss what you would like to be different in your life and how we can achieve that for you. If you wish to stay for a session after that, it lasts for another 1.25hours. This is a lot longer than many therapists sessions! So your first appointment lasts 1.75hrs!  We can achieve a lot in this first session! It is very different from CBT or long term counselling. We are looking   for results that are effective and cost efficient.

What does ‘solution focused’ therapy mean?

A core belief of the solution-focused approach is that YOU have the necessary skills and resources to find solutions to your problems. As your solution focused hypnotherapist I will work alongside you, asking questions to help you recognise where you are now, visualize where you’d like to be, and develop your own strengths to make that solution a reality. These ideas and strategies are then reinforced in hypnosis: an enjoyable, natural, but powerful way to engage your subconscious mind in helping make the changes you’d like. Solution focused hypnotherapy recognises that, if the underlying issues are not addressed (e.g. anxiety leading to poor choices), this approach is likely to have limited effect. I believe that, in working towards increased general wellbeing and self-esteem, you’ll make the changes you need to get back on track. So, solution focused hypnotherapy can help not only with your presenting problem but can also help you feel more in control of your life overall! As a modern psychotherapeutic approach, solution focused hypnotherapy uses practical, structured, and well-researched strategies to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time. Crucially, in solution focused hypnotherapy, therapists look at what the client wants to achieve (the solution) rather than at whatever prompted them to seek help (the problem). Most of my clients reach their goals in one or two sessions, but longer term support is available for those who wish to have it.

Is hypnotherapy ok for children?

Yes! I work with children from about 6 years and upwards for a wide variety of problems. Fears, phobias, school anxieties, bullying, eating issues, sleep problems, bedwetting and so on. Children respond very well to guided imagery as they have very good imaginations! I work with the parent or caregiver first to establish the problem. When I meet children their responsible adult is with them so they can support the changes that the child is making and ensure that the family is on board to put new behaviours into practice. It is a team effort! Children report find it a very nice and relaxing experience and like the idea of being in control of what was worrying them.

What medical conditions do you work with?

A lot of medical conditions are caused or affected by the mind and anxiety is at the root of a lot of conditions. Pain management is helped by hypnotherapy as are a lot of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, IBS, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia and long Covid. Heart conditions are worsened by anxiety, and even after treatment patients are often fearful of resuming normal activity. Research confirms that cancer and oncology treatments are well supported by hypnotherapy (with your doctor’s approval). A relaxed and cooperative mind works in partnership with your treatment plan and if you are fearful of radiography or claustrophobic then we can work with that. I have a lot of experience with helping couples with infertility issues and call the children my ‘hypno babies’! The process of conception can be helped so much by your state of mind to create the right conditions in your body on what is a very challenging journey. Ask me how I can help you.

Testimonials

"My anxiety had reached the stage of ruining just about every aspect of my life, work relationships and my health. The tablets I was taking from the doctor really only made me feel worse. A friend recommended Sue and after the first session I was a changed man. I really can't explain how it works, but it does. I can't waste time regretting that I didn't go earlier as I never would have thought of it. I can tell you that most of your problems start in your mind. Just so grateful"

"I was embarrassed to be drinking about two bottles of wine a day and knew I couldn't stop it. It was damaging my marriage and I was spending money I didn't have. I was full of good intentions, but always failed. Every Monday morning I'd tell myself I was stopping and every Monday evening I found myself sloshed. Two of my friends saw Sue and if they could change their drinking patterns then so could I. It was ridiculously easy, and it only took one session! Lost a lot of weight and gained self esteem and a good bank balance. Hope this helps other women who are worried about their drinking:)"

"We talk about being stressed but until it hits you no one has an idea of how bad it is. I thought I was dying or having a heart attack and yet I knew it was my own thoughts that were doing it. Sue was so kind and understanding and I trusted her at once. After just one session I felt normal again and she taught me skills to keep me calm that I can use for the rest of my life. I can face Christmas with a postive attitude."

"I have now been off my insulin for 6 months. I waited to send you this as I couldn't believe my success would last. GP is surprised but couldn't argue with the blood tests. Losing weight has given me a new lease of life. That is sweeter than any chocolate I used to scoff. You changed this old diabetic for life. Thanks doesn't seem enough."
